Review: Predestination

Predestination

2015

Written and Directed by Michael and Peter Spierig

File this one under "What the hell just happened?", folks.

OK.  Look.  This movie involves time paradoxes, weird alternate histories and Ethan Hawke working with the same writer/director/brothers that he worked with in the under appreciated Daybreakers.  If all of that has you running for the hills, I totally understand.  It's a heavy combination if that's not up your alley.

But.

Look at that picture up there.  That is Sarah Snook, an Australian actress who's (as far as I can tell) making her North American debut in this film.  She's the reason you should be checking out this movie.  Sure, the plot is fun and involves people trying to stop crimes before they're happening, weird paradoxes folding in on themselves, an alternate history of the US where women are being recruited to be...um...comfort on deep space voyages.  But when it comes down to it this movie is a showcase for Snook and what she can pull off as an actor and you owe it to yourself to track it down.

Predestination is currently in a very limited theatrical release, is in the iTunes store and the various other download services and is on VOD, depending on your cable system (checking the movie's website, it's on pretty much all the majors).

Rating: 3.5/5

2015 Rankings (So far):
